My first novel, Beyond the Door, is a traditional genre work of fiction for children aged about 12. It is heavily inspired by the works of Enid Blyton and Arthur Ransome, but updates the genre by bringing it into a contemporary setting, and introducing powerful action sequences that would not have been found in earlier works.
During the course of the story, four children discover an underground tunnel network, which is being used by modern day gang of smugglers. They investigate the gang, and discover their darkest secrets. They discover that a major operation is about to take place, so they tip off the police, and watch from the comfort of a nearby yacht as the action unfolds. It soon becomes clear to the children and the authorities that all is not as it might at first seem…
Beyond the Door was written between 1993 and 1997, and was first published in 1998 by Blaisdon, a small Yorkshire-based publishing company. I republished it as in eBook in 2010.
